Sew What?

Thank you so much for the nice comments on my whimsy shirt. I love it and plan to sew it again. Maybe not with the contrasting fabrics, however, it would be too distinct and then people would know that I sew the same patterns over and over again.

It's been about 99 degrees outside and 90 inside my house for the last couple of weeks and I haven't felt like sewing. However, I didn't have much time to sew until now. So I went out and bought myself this tiny little air conditioner for my sewing room. I installed it in about 15 minutes and I've been feel cool every since.

Before I bought the air conditioner, however, I needed something cool to sew in. I had this 100% cotton single knit in my stash for a couple of years. It came from Fashionfabricsclub.com and for some reason I bought 5 yards of it at 60" wide. I don't even look good in this color. Sorry about the picture. I took about 15 using the timer and this was the best one. I can't seem to get timer shots in focus.

I used KS 3160 to make this summer dress and used a picot fold-over elastic around the armhole and neck edge. I didn't remove the seam allowance before putting on the FOE so the shoulders are wider and the neckline is higher than it probably should be. I made it as a dress, but Husband and Son say it's a nightie. What do you think? Should I wear it outside the house? Like to the grocery store?

My sewing room is clean. The air conditioner is keeping it about 78 degrees and I have the next couple of weeks with very few commitments and lots of time to sew. So, what should I make? After this post I'm going to work on the Vogue 8379 alterations, but I'm sure I can get it made by tomorrow. After that, I don't know what to sew. Any ideas or suggestions?

  1. :) I love the picture of your Bernina basking in the cool! For timer photos you have to focus the camera on something and then stand where that something was and take the picture with the camera in the same spot as before and you will be in focus - I figured this out when I got a camera that focused! My previous Kodak digicam was fixed focus and that was a good deal with a timer. :)) I focus it on the wall and then I go stand right at the wall, and that seems to work!

  3. I can't believe you have been trying to sleep in a 90 degree house. Good thing you made a cool nightie to sleep in. :-)

  4. Congratulations on the air conditioner! I hate hot weather. I mean--hate it. Before we got central air, I had an air-conditioner in my sewing room, and I drug a mattress in there and slept on the floor!

  5. Actually we have a whole house fan that sucks all the cool night air into the house. We turn it on as soon as it's cooler outside than inside. Sleeping is very comfortable if you can stand how loud the fan is.

  6. Whew I can't do anything in a house without a/c but sleep and bitch!!

But as far as what you should make, I say something out of the ordinary for you but special and using some of your favorite fabric.

And I agree with your husband and son on the dress.

  7. Hey, I couldn't sew in my 2nd floor sewing room (that gets the West sun) without my window unit. It's about the best investment I made for that room. I just can't sew (or do much else for that matter) when I'm HOT.

  8. I say nightie but even better "sewing dress". This is something you can wear to sew and slip in and out of easily to try your fit. Cute.

  9. Congrats on the new air conditioner! And I'm soooo jealous that you have lots of time set aside to sew! Can't wait to see what you make over the next few weeks!

  10. The problem with a dress that might be good enough to go to the grocery store is...that is usually when you bump into people that you wish you were wearing something else, Once I drove my kids to school in a rush and I threw on a sweat outfit with no bra and that morning there was a car accident in front of me and the policeman had to have me stand on the side of the road and make a statement as a witness...I never went out that way again! It was not a pretty sight! ha ha
