I really like my new TNT t-shirt pattern. It will work out just as nicely as a basis for a miriad of t-shirt redrafts as my lost TNT pattern. For my first redrafted version, I only changed the neckline. Pam Erny from Off-The-Cuff wrote a tutorial for a Spiral Cowl Collar and Liana from Sew Intriguing wrote a tutorial for a Twisted Binding. I made my new top with a binding width something in between these two.
I cut my collar 6" wide and the length of the neckline on the pattern. Then without measuring, I just shifted the center back seam of the collar about 2" and basted the collar in half. This left the collar twisted in the same manner as shown in Pam and Liana's tutorial.
I'm not really happy with the way mine turned out. It doesn't drape like Pam's does and it makes the neckline much too high to look flattering on me. This might be a result of the slinky fabric I used. This fabric hangs quite heavy and drags the top down. In fact, it doesn't fit nearly as nicely as the other two t-shirts I've made from this pattern.
While this top wasn't in my original wardrobe plan, the fabric does match and will be a nice addition to the pieces I was already making. I should be able to get the pants cut out today and probably sewn up as well. I will be watching/listening to Season 5 and 6 of Bones while I work today. I've already seen these episodes so I won't have to pay too much attention, but I really love this show and the relationship the main characters have with each other. What do you watch/listen to while you sew?
Pretty top. It's always intersting how different fabrics work up in the exact same pattern. You just never know.
ReplyDeleteI listen to music when I sew, usually quite loud. I love gospel, the American Standards, sixties and fifties music, and Latin Jazz, quite a bit of diversity here. I usually start out with Mahalia Jackson on Pandora and then move to Ella Fitzgerald, and then Malo. Throw in a little Joan Baez, CSN&Y, and Amy Winehouse, and I am good for the day, total relaxation!
Love the fabric of the top. Shame it didn't work out how you wanted it to.
ReplyDeleteI don't have the luxury of a TV where I sew. I am not lucky enough to have a sewing room so I have to sew in the dining room!! Sometimes I put the radio on but I am still so new at sewing that I need to concentrate.
I love Bones too. Did you know her sister is in a show called New Girl. If I could watch something something I would probably watch the West Wing - my all time favourite show.
BTW - I have found that your website loads just fine in Google Chrome.
The fabric colours are very flexible for the wardrobe - this might be a good top for under a jacket.
ReplyDeleteI don't listen to, or watch anything while I sew - just enjoy the peace and quite, window open, fan buzzing away, and get lost in my own little world...
I've had the same experience using slinky knits! It's so very heavy, and I usually have to completely redo the armholes or else they are just in the wrong place. Your top, however, turned out lovely! The fabric is very pretty and should go great with your jean jacket.
ReplyDeleteThe fabric is really pretty. Do you recall the source?
ReplyDeleteWhile sewing I sometimes listen to music, sometimes the TV - usually crime dramas, Bones, or The Big Bang Theory, or sometimes whatever is on Discovery. Sometimes I prefer music - just depends on my mood! I have one of those Bose speakers for my iPod in my studio.
Love the colors and the collar idea. I am going to buy a small flatscreen for my sewing room. I've started listeing to book Cds this year as well as the itunes selections on my computer.
ReplyDeleteI do all my watching on my 22" widescreen monitor. I also listen to audible books on my computer as well. Between Hulu, Netflix, the networks on-line streamed episodes, I don't need a tv in my sewing room.
DeleteTerific T! Nothing like a good TNT. My Tshirt pattern is from 1974--an old Stretch & Sew. It has been a cardi, a coat, a dress and a nightgown. Oh, and I have TV and a radio/CD player in my sewing room. I like daytime talk shows, and old black/white movies. And Bruce Springsteen. And jazz.
ReplyDeleteI watch different shows while sewing, like you I watch them via my computer(s) while sewing. My desk top has a large widescreen monitor. My favorite streamers are Hulu and Amazon Prime; I also will catch some items at the sites direct like CBS.com or NatGeo. Lately I've been watching the seasons of Lost via Amazon since I never seen that show. I love Bones watch it too when I see it out! I also find it a great time to watch old favorite movies.
ReplyDeletelove your blog one of my favorites for sure....Just wanted to thank you for your words of encouragement on my blog. It made my day thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteI didn't see a way to e-mail you directly. I love reading your blog and seeing what you have sewed for yourself.
ReplyDeleteI just made a t-shirt from the Ottobre 303 pattern. I had planned to use your flower embellishments but it didn't work out - next time.
I posted about it here:

You are referenced and I just wanted to let you know.

Kathy
Where are you? Have you sewn anything lately?
ReplyDeleteI've been making costumes and concentrating on my new way of eating. I'm hoping to get my sewing room put back together from costume making and getting started on my spring/summer clothes.
DeleteThanks Sherril( hope I got your name right) for joining my blog. I am just beginning to sew clothing again and am glad to add your site to my bloglist. Looking forward for the exchange of ideas.
