Weekend Sewing

I'm dead tired and need to get to bed, but I just wanted to share what I got done this weekend. I know I was going to start on my dress, but I just had my bathroom painted 3 weeks ago and bought fabric for the window 2 weeks ago, so I decided to make them first.

Elizabeth Larsen came to Los Angeles during her Man Forgetting Tour of 2012 and I jumped on the opportunity to show her around. While in the Los Angeles garment district, I picked up this great paisley print at Michael Levine's hoping that the colors would work in my bathroom. Lucky for me they do.

I couldn't go to bed on Saturday until the curtains were hung. Then this morning I started Simplicity 2174. It's an amazing fit pattern, and has lots of opportunities to get the fit right. Obviously on my first try I didn't quite get it right. I cut this pattern out about a month ago and did a bunch of alterations based on a muslin of the bodice. In the fashion fabric, I had a fit that was too big. After several alterations and an almost altercation with the husband--he was wielding the pins--I think the fit looks pretty good now.

I don't look very lovely and the dress has lots more to go, like a hem, for instance, until it is completed. But it's starting to take shape.

I also basted together S2615 to see if it was going to be too big and would have to go to my sister. Nope, it looks like it's going to fit. Keep in mind this is just muslin fabric and may or may not be worn outside the house. Since there isn't much style to this dress, I think the fabric is what is going to make it or break it. I think I know just what it needs from the stash. I'll share tomorrow what I've decided upon.

There you go, my weekend of sewing. Looks like I'm going to be working most days this week, but I hope to get the first dress completed so I can get on to the next project.

  1. Looks like your dress will turn out just fine. Even though you're losing weight, you still need clothes. I think it does a lot for your vanity to look your best while losing weight. And sewing takes your mind off of food!

  2. I actually like that fabric on S2316, but I do have a taste for loud prints.

Tonight it hit me--what your sewing class should be for the LA area--learn how to sew pet clothing! and you could jazz up the name, like Rock Star Sewing for Pets or whatever....

  4. Hello Sherril , I was over looking for reviews of the uniquely you dress forms and I read your very comprehensive one and was so pleased to see that you are still blogging as I would love to ask you some questions .
I am looking at a dress form to replace my adjustable one . My biggest problem is that I am very long in the upper body from the nape of my neck to the waist I am about 21/2 inches longer than average . I was wondering if the Uy dress form is able to accomodate that problem ? I would really appreciate your opinion as I really dont want to have to go down the duct tape road . That just feels too hard .Thanks in anticipation of your help Marianne

  5. Hi Sherril, sorry if this is not the preferred place to ask this but I saw you mention on pattern review that you took some sewing classes at Chaffey College. I would really like to learn and am near Chaffey - would you recommend their school? Any individual classes? (I just want to do sew my daughters clothes and myself not start a business) thank you <3

  7. Hey Sherril, I have an idea: how about posting what kinds of things you eat over a typical few days? I'd be very interested to see a low-carb vegetarian weightloss diet, for one! I'm not sewing much either due to hoping for more baby weightloss, which is stubbornly not budging yet despite exercise and a 'pretty good' low carb diet (I think). There's probably more people out there like me with the same curiousity about your successful low-carb veggie regimen. So? What do you think?
