My Sewing Saga Begins

I've been trying to get myself a blog for about two years. With DH being a computer programmer and all, I asked his advise. BIG mistake He thought he should write one for me. Like the cobbler's daughter, I was still waiting for my blog. I kept bugging him, but you can see how well that worked out. So, I decided to do what everyone else was doing and started my own. SHHHH, don't tell DH!

PR's Wardrobe Contest

I joined the wardrobe contest in the beginning of February and still haven't sew a single garment. I did pick out my fabrics.

Since picking out my fabrics I've replaced all the blue and the prints with dark brown and brown/green prints. My wardrobe is now named and I'm calling it Chocolate Mints. The colors won't change any more (I hope), but I've spent the last two months deciding on my patterns and doing alterations. If you're someone who can sew a pattern right out of the envelope, I hate you! Only because I'm very, very jealous, but I digress. I picked New Look 6609 for my jacket. I've lengthened it 4 1/2 inches and cut it out of a green Sophia knit and lined it with a white Sophia knit for a sort of slouchy reversible cardigan. This is not one of the recommended fabrics, but I decided it could work and made my muslin out of a 1970's era double knit which has approximately the same amount of stretch.

After doing the FBA and sewing up the muslin, the center front swung back toward the side seams. As you can see in the picture, by pinning out the FBA the front hung properly. So I removed my FBA (good thing I can do these in my sleep) and just added width to the pattern piece using the pivot method. On the back I had to add a high round back alteration and I did a sloping shoulder for good measure. Of course I also added to the hip at all seams and reduced the shoulder width in the princess seams. I think my final version will turn out nicely. I just have to cut out the interfacing for the edges to keep them from stretching and I can begin sewing my first wardrobe garment.

I hope you come back and visit my new blog often.
